Zig Day: Osaka, Japan

Hey everyone!

I’m just about done renovating a space I own in to a some kind off workshop/collaboration/event space thing.
(still nailing down exactly everything I’d like to do there).

I’d love to start organizing/hosting regular Zig Day events, I work as a programmer professionally but I’m just diving into systems dev and Zig, so feeling a little odd hosting an event for something I’m not all that knowledgeable about yet.

Any thoughts, specially from others that may have ran similar events before?

Exciting! By the way, I’m going to be in 北九州 for two weeks in early November for a language immersion/study vacation with my tutor. If you do one during that time, I can attend!

Hi Kei,

you don’t have to be a Zig expert to host a Zig Day, what matters is that you have energy and interest in doing the work required to setup a good event (that’s mainly logistical work, like what you already mentioned in your post, or alternatively scouting for locations to use to host the event).

Secondarily it matters that you understand that Zig Days are not just about writing Zig, but also about striving to create software you can love and learn how to apply systems thinking to problems.

This page on zig.day has some resources that invite you to check out https://zig.day/about/.

I think that’s pretty much it. Once you confirm that you want to proceed shoot me an email at loris@zig.day and I’ll create a new zig day location page for you.

As a personal note, I’ve been looking for a long time for an excuse to visit Japan so I’m especially happy to see that you’re interested.

Beautiful space! Welcome to ziggit!
If you have read the zig day website you’re pretty much qualified in my opinion :).

To ensure attendance, make sure you announce at least a month before, unless you already have some people you know.

hey, I’m in your shoes, organizing Portland’s – and Andrew lives here and attends. so, believe me when I echo what kristoff said: you don’t need to be experienced with the language to run one. actually, that’s half the reason I wanted to get involved with organizing it. I wanted to create opportunities to learn from other excited and more experienced people. the hardest part is finding a space, and it sounds like you’ve got a nice arrangement already!

Ohhhh, that is awesome. :exploding_head:

Yea I can definitely plan one around then, basically just got a finish building the restroom and the place should be fit enough to host.

Pretty much a solo project (hobby) on this renovation but I should be more that done by next month.

Def tell me the dates your might be free to travel up to 大阪 from 北九州 and I’ll do my best to align it.

I think I check most of the boxes just a bit intimidated actually being this close to putting it into action.

Heck yea, If I can make a space thats becomes a good enough excuse to fly halfway across the world, that be awesome.

Thanks!

Also, yes right and I plan to have the posting for at least a month before the day I decide for the event.

Will probably at least throw together a website landing page as well as post on MeetUp and DoorKeeper, also gonna email Kristoff and hopefully be allowed to post the event date on Zig.Day~

Thanks for the pep!

I wanted to create opportunities to learn from other excited and more experienced people.

Yes, this is more or less the sentiment and maybe I’m worrying a bit it to much or unnecessarily, but the idea of being in a room of people all interested in learning then not having anyone that has enough knowledge to clearly explain or direct how to solve/do something in the thing that their interested in and the possibility of that causing enthusiasm/interest to fizzle, worries me a bit.

As the host to me it would fell like that it would be on me to cover for what might be lacking in the room.

I enjoy teaching and seeing other people learn no things and I might be thinking to much about this as if I were teaching another classroom

I guess I should just be prepared to have as much resources I can point to if anyone does ask.

It’s less like a classroom and more just nerding out. I think approach it more like you’re inviting friends (that you don’t know yet) over to sit around and code. Maybe two or three of you have a common thing to work on, or you’re just body doubling to keep each other productive. Facilitating is really just creating a comfortable environment for these friends.

I’m still figuring out what that means, really, but I started with making sure there is coffee, tea, and snacks, as well as a space that helps set the right atmosphere for intellectual curiosity

If you haven’t seen it, I wrote about how our first event went: My first Zig Day — tristanpemble

Crazy coincidence, I have a holiday booked for Japan from 28. October to 13. November!

If it’s during that time, count me in too  I won’t have anything on me to program with. But I’m very keen to meet up, see what everyone is working on, and learn some things!

I am based in Seoul, but if you’re coming, I won’t miss the change to attend, if I am welcome!

I would’ve loved to be at a meetup.
I just finished visiting Osaka (I’m from Berlin).
My general advice is to just start and ask people attending about what they would like to do going forward.

Happy to see this meetup happening! It seems that quite a few Zig community members are interested in it, wish I could be there. Good luck with the first event, have fun!

P.S. Love the watercolor artwork! Btw, it seems that “Zig” is written as “zigzag” in katakana – ジグザグ, instead of just ジグ. Thought I’d point it out in case it wasn’t on purpose.

Thanks for that useful info and I love the write up!

Plan is to have it open to public so pretty much anyone is welcome, I’m trying to get the dates nailed down by next week.

Thanks i thought i got a bit carried away with drawing the banner lol as for the ジグザグ haha yes i know it says zigzag, Someone else in the room saw me working on the banner and said it should be called zigzag day I thought it was funny so I threw it in there

There also the one that named the たこ焼き shop in the image.

It’s a beautiful banner, wow!

The たこ焼き shop looks great, so detailed – very diorama-like. Also, that octopus mascot is my favorite part!

Btw, I know that 屋 here means “shop”, but まる usually means “circle”, which I thought was a reference to the たこ焼き shape.

P.S. Always fun to see more artists in the Zig community:
