Zig Day: Bristol, UK

Hey everyone! I’m organizing (with a few friends) a Zig Day in Bristol in the UK.

For anyone unfamiliar with this format, take a look here. Information about this specific Zig Day will be posted here.

We’re hoping to run the first event around a month from now, hopefully in Bristol Central Library although that’s subject to change. If you’re interested, please do subscribe to email notifications or follow the RSS feed (both on the event page linked above) to learn about events as we schedule them.

For anyone who doesn’t know me, I’m a member of the Zig “core team” – I work on the Zig compiler full-time. If anyone is interested to learn about the juicy compiler internals, I’m sure I’ll inevitably start showing people how things work under the hood. Also helping to organise this is my friend Silver (you might know her as @silversquirl), who is very experienced with Zig and systems programming. She’s willing to help out people who are just starting out with Zig – in other words, this event is explicitly beginner-friendly, so don’t be put off if you’re new to Zig!

If you’re interested in this event, please do let us know by leaving a comment here! Nothing formal, it’d just be useful for us to know how many people are considering attending.

Thanks everyone – see you in September!

I’d be keen for a UK meetup  I’m based in London but would still consider attending a Bristol meetup if I’m available.

That feeling when you check out the bridge in the Bristol Zig Day banner and… The Zig Zag appears

The journey from south east London to Bristol is quite a trek. I’m considering it, but I feel like a 2 1/2 hour drive each way stretches the idea of a day trip.

Nice to see a UK meetup! Would like to attend, but from Manchester 3.5 hours each way would mean staying a night. Not ruling it out but makes it less likely for me

Yeah, it’s unfortunate that transport is such a nightmare. If there turned out to be a large number of people who wanted to attend but found the timings too tight, perhaps we’d consider a later start to make same-day travel a little more feasible – so, everyone, please do also flag up if a later start would make it easier for you to attend!

Hey everyone, we’ve just announced the first event! It’s on the 20th of September, in Bristol Central Library. You can find more details, and the RSVP form, on zig.day here: Zig Day

Been a bit of a lurker up till now, as I consider myself still a beginner in Zig. But I thought I’d post in case it helps :). It’s great to see a UK based Zig meet-up. Decided it would be fun to attend and hope to meet some lovely people there!

In case anyone missed it, our second event is coming up next weekend! The details, including an RSVP link, are again on zig.day: Zig Day

If you’re planning on coming to this one, make sure to RSVP, because we need to know who to expect because of the new venue. If you don’t RSVP, you won’t be let in!

Looking forward to seeing everyone, be it again or for the first time

How was the first one?

Bit of a drive (I’m a tad west of London) but it’s one I do for work often enough.

What format does it take? Is there anyone giving a talk? …or is it more discussions, working on projects, etc?

If anyone else shows up today, we’re not downstairs anymore, so you’ll have to give Fran a ring so we can let you in—his number is on the event page!

@DoingGitStuff, @WeeBull, sorry for not replying, busy week and it slipped my mind! The first event went nicely, you can see a couple of photos at zig.day (and we’ll put up ones from the event happening now within a few days). In terms of the format, the general idea is covered on the zig.day website; the main focus is collaboratively working on projects (whatever you want!) and learning about Zig and systems programming. Though we’ve not done so yet, for future events we might look at giving people some short slots at the end to demo what they’ve been working on!

Hey everyone, we’ve scheduled the next event for the 7th of February! Thanks to Parallel Wireless for agreeing to host the event again—all of the details are here. Like last month, if you’re planning to come, it’s important that you RSVP using Luma.

Looking forward to seeing everyone! And of course, if you have any questions, just ask—I’ll make sure to respond in a timely manner this time :stuck_out_tongue:
