What is allowed in the Jobs category?

I relayed here a job posting (originally sent on Twitter) about a programming job using Zig and it was removed without explanation besides “Your post was flagged as spam: the community feels it is an advertisement, something that is overly promotional in nature instead of being useful or relevant to the topic as expected.”

What was the problem with this post? Can we post job announcements in the Jobs category?

The twitter post was too vague on details. No name of the company doing hiring, not a lot of information about the Job. If you have better information about it please let us know and we can restore the post, but I don’t want the category to be rumors to go DM people on Twitter. Perhaps it will keep some legitimate posts off the board, but hopefully it will encourage people to be more open about jobs rather than shadowy. It’s all I can hope to do to try to nudge the market in a better way.

I still disagree, specially because of the insult that I posted spam. Even if you disagree with the post, you should not frame it as spam.

Insulting you was not an intention. Questions of language aside, the primary issue is that you were not yourself the originator of the job offer.

The mods are discussing how to communicate about the Jobs category, one thing we agree on is that it’s not for third-party rumors of jobs posted elsewhere. In future we may simply move posts like that to a different category.

If you know the person who wants to hire, by all means encourage them to post here! We don’t want to stand between our community and Zig jobs, quite the opposite.

We do want postings in the Jobs category to be from the hiring party. I see that referring to it as ‘spam’ feels like an accusation of bad intentions on your part, it’s clear that you’re acting in good faith.

Insult was not intentional. Simply the category that was put under. I agree with memnion, I don’t think you had bad intentions, and apologize for the insinuation.

If such messages as you described are popping up all the times, then an aggressive approach is warranted. We don’t need no gatekeeper when there’re crickets.

Personally I’d rather have crickets than the degenerate state a lot of job sites have turned into.

This Zig community feels like a small group of professionals working together on challenging tasks. So for me any jobs posted here would be a reflection upon that, and be more in the category of direct employer offerings.

In fact I’d vote to remove the category and save the mods a lot of pain as v1 approaches, and the fake-job AIgents turn up.

What evidence is there that this forum is in danger of becoming a job site full of fake ads? You’re not even presenting an operative theory on how this transformation would come about. Are we supposed to just make decisions on the basis of paranoid now?

This is getting a bit off topic.

What’s allowed in the Jobs category is first-party jobs postings, what isn’t is recruiter posts, reposts of third-party jobs, and things which aren’t jobs. Pretty simple.

We’re not imposing elaborate requirements: just be a real person or organization with a Zig job.

We’ll deal with the AI recruiter apocalypse if and when it arrives, but, it hasn’t.

OK, but this policy was apparently not displayed anywhere, it seems (unless I missed something) that we only have the summary “Employment opportunities related to the Zig Programming Language.” in About.

See this earlier post,

presumably… we “wait for it”, and do our best with what’s been conveyed in this thread, for now.

That’s fair, I think third party postings do have a place but, also want to make sure we can follow up for more info if needed. If we push such posts to media, and then reserve jobs category for first party postings that give space for followup questions, that could work. Or maybe add tags to classify them?
