PROJECT NAME: Argus
Hey! I’m new here so take it easy on me guys ![]()
Our flagship is Cygnus A: a spinning black hole and accretion disk. Every pixel’s light is traced along real Kerr light paths on the GPU. The shadow’s edge matches Bardeen’s analytic curve to a precision of 1.8e-5 M, and 49 physics claims are verified by tests. On an M3 it spends only ~2.7 ms of GPU and ~2% CPU per frame.
TL:DR - it is as real a quasar gets without a supercomputer.
10 themes come ready, including a bioluminescent night beach, an Orion Nebula built from VLT/MUSE data, a roulette wheel with real ball physics, a live sky map and a green-phosphor system monitor. Which you can modify all as you like.
Journey:
First we started with Zig and designed the black hole. Then, as we brought the black hole’s math closer to reality, the math got heavier, and we looked into different options to optimize it. At that point we discovered that it was better to do the computation in Zig and write the drawing in Metal.
Where did it come from:
We were playing with zig TUI’s and it felt like something that runs in the terminal would run on the bg too. I checked, and it does.
Supported Zig versions
It’s Zig 0.17 + Metal
AI / LLM usage disclosure
Come on, did I write a Kerr black hole all by myself in one week? Obviously robots were involved, before bashing tho open it and see for yourself whether we’re shipping slop.
