I like the idea but that very much starts to feel like int ioctl(int fd, unsigned long op, ...); in disguise, where basically half of planet earth can be controlled with this function.

It should be mentioned that std.Io was overridable using a declaration in the root source file. This was reverted because it broke autodocs.
I expect a mechanism like this to be used to implement std.Io on embedded platforms, and in principle, I don’t see a good reason not to provide it, and it would completely sidestep the problems with memory usage @mnemnion mentions.
