# 🍳 Now You’re Cooking! - A Roguelike Deckbuilder

* * *

[![](https://img.youtube.com/vi/f1BWJVupUOA/maxresdefault.jpg "Now You're Cooking! - Official Announcement Trailer") ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1BWJVupUOA)

> Now You’re Cooking! is a roguelike deckbuilder about running your own restaurant. Cook delicious meals, build an extravagant menu, and keep your patrons happy. Did I mention that rent doubles every month?

- [Trailer](https://youtu.be/f1BWJVupUOA)
- [Steam Page](https://store.steampowered.com/app/4327580/?utm_source=s)

I’ve been working on this game for about a year, but I’m announcing it publicly for the first time today. The engine is all Zig, the game itself is closed source but all of the game dev libraries that make up the engine are [open source on my codeberg](https://codeberg.org/Games-by-Mason).

I also maintain [AYCB/SDL](https://github.com/allyourcodebase/SDL) and a few repos on the Codeberg [AYCB](https://codeberg.org/allyourcodebase/).

This is my second commercial game. Feel free to AMA about this game, my engine, or indie dev in general! I’m also at SYCL this week if you wanna say hi in person. 🙂

I thought that was a great trailer. The frames with the drums stopping in on “\*rent doubles every month“ was a good touch. Game flow looks pretty fluid too!

Thanks!! I hired a friend who works in video to do the trailer, and I’m glad I did. I know my way around the basics of Davinci and Kdenlive, but I don’t feel like I speak the language or video well enough to make nice edits like this.

I had to Google Davinci and Kdenlive. I’ve never worked with video editing. I believe I would be too fidgety for it. Anyway.

Congratulations on the announcement!

Blender also has a great video editor, there was only one thing I wish I had (rounded corners on PiP) when editing video but I ended up not needing it in the long run and it wasn’t too hard to get around. I used it to edit a couple of talks I did this year.

Congrats on the announcement @MasonRemaley! Gonna keep this (and your engine!) in mind when I talk to people about Zig.

Thanks!! I haven’t tried Blender’s video editor in 5 or 10 years, I’ll have to give it another shot. I love Blender for 3d modeling and IIUC they’ve done a lot of work on the video editing since I last looked at it.

Lol this is hilarious. As the preserver of Blizzard North’s Diablo II (2000) and Lord of Destruction (2001), it brings me happiness to see the words “Roguelike” in the game description. Good job! Are you thinking of bringing in item rarity levels into the deckbuilding (Common, Magic, Rare, Set, Unique), something like that? Allowing the person to try to “keep finding a better, more rarer version” of potentially the same card? It also reminds me of when I played Yu-Gi-Oh back when I was a kid and people would try not only to build the deck they wanted, but specifically wanted to have every card in the deck either be 1st edition, hollow, or both!

As someone who does really play games or intend to buy games on steam…this trailer raised my brow…you might be able to convince me to buy this. Well done!

It has the nice mix of “this seems ‘cozy’”, but also needs me to use my brain. I like it. This must have a LOT of work! I’d love to see some blog posts about the process if you would spare so e words 🙂

This looks great! I especially love the animations and how the cards move around the scene. That shuffle is neat 👌

Yes definitely! The current breakdown is common, uncommon, rare, and legendary. The rarer cards are more powerful, but it’s still important to be smart about synergies because powerful cards typically have tradeoffs.

For example there’s a legendary card that makes vegetarian meals worth a lot more, but discounts all meals containing meat by 100%. This can be super powerful, but whether or not it’s a good idea on any given run depends on how you’ve built your deck out.

> This looks great! I especially love the animations and how the cards move around the scene. That shuffle is neat 👌

Thanks!! I used to perform magic so I really like cards, and am always disappointed that people don’t show the cards being shuffled haha. The animations are all created with a mix of my [FSM library](https://codeberg.org/games-by-Mason/mr_fsm), my [tween library](https://codeberg.org/games-by-Mason/mr_tween), and my [spring transform](https://codeberg.org/Games-by-Mason/mr_ecs/src/branch/main/src/ext/spring_transform.zig) abstraction.

I love the spring transform in particular. It lets me just set the position orientation and scale I want an object to be at, but instead of changing instantaneously, it’s pulled towards that state as if it was connected to it via a damped spring. You can set the spring to be underdamped, overdamped, or crticially damped depending on how fast you want it to converge/whether you want it to bounce.

Unlike the tweens, this works great even when the target position is changing over time.

Thanks!! I have some posts [here](https://gamesbymason.com/blog/), but they were all from before I announced this game so I was being coy with the details.

Once I get back from SYCL I’m gonna start writing more about what my process with this game has been, and I’ll share how the announce went and such. 🙂

Ah ok I must have missed it then when I watched the trailer. My eye is used to a specific color association for rarity types given I’ve been playing Diablo II for 23 years haha.

Thanks for the reply @MasonRemaley. Keep up the good work.
